EIN KIND UNSERER ZEIT: A Child of Our Times

Horvath's recently published The Age of the Fish (Dial) was a protest against regimented education in a totalitarian state -- leading only toward war. This too is an indictment of the dictator state and modern warfare when the typical ""child of our times"", after a sad childhood, volunteers in a fascist army and is forced to wage war against a peaceful country. The horror of warfare, the destruction of personal ideals lead to insanity and eventual death. The thesis underlying this extremely depressing life history is that the individual himself is responsible for right and wrong, good and evil, and that no community has the right to determine anything which infringes on personal ethics and liberty. Odd, but interesting handling, in a prose style which borders on blank verse.
