Guardians of Liberty: Sam Adams and John Hancock is the one among the author's many excellent titles for younger readers that this book seems to follow and her Bell That Rang for Freedom (1965- p. 911-J313) would naturally follow this one. The author uses quotations from contemporary sources, writes clearly and pays attention to the details that youngsters are likely to wonder about-- where did the soldiers eat and sleep, what was morale like in each army, how were they disciplined? The personalities and capabilities of Washington's generals also emerge as a part of the running history of the battles. The book begins with a concise summary of the political climate in which war was declared and ends with the 1783 reunion of Washington and his officers. It reads like the fascinating story it is all the way through; the bonus extras are in the facts that build a complete picture of the Army's part of the Revolutionary War which gets a major amount of curriculum attention.
