Childhood reminiscences of a little Russian girl growing up in the ""big house"" on a country estate before the Revolution. Tenia tells of learning to swim, of playing with the herdsman's boys and making a shirt for one so that he will not have to wait for his one shirt to dry and can instead play, of the peasants visiting her father on business. The sad and painful incidents seem to color the book -- leaving Mama to go to school in Smolenski, no longer swimming with the boys; being approached by the coachman. The feeling of the rural and Russian locality is slight -- the author seems to avoid the Revolution which causes the family to be evicted from their estate. The scope of the book is personal, and the book's appeal will be as reminiscence. Flavorless.
