AN INTRODUCTION TO PARETO

By

Pub Date: Sept. 4th, 1934
Publisher: Knopf

Pareto, the Italian sociologist, seems to be coming into his own in popular parlance. That is, if the fact is an indication that on this season's list Harcourt, Brace is publishing the translation of his four-volume work, The Mind and Society, in November; and Alfred Knopf this volume, which for the lay reader is a sine qua non before plunging into closer analysis of the great work itself. For further information about the Harcourt, Brace publication, send for the prospectus which is in preparation. The price for the sociology is to be $16.00, before publication, $20.00 thereafter....Pareto's own work is -- so say these writers -- abstruse for the average reader, and necessitates an introduction, not only to the substance, but to his method of approach, the scientific setting-up exercises, as it were. This ""introduction"" distills, clarifies, illustrates his basic points in modern application, gives the man in the street an entreè to the closed book of Pareto's own work, and gives the student of sociology the glossary, in its discussion of terminology and analysis of purpose. It is not intended, however, as a digest. Nor is it light reading for an idle hour. Sell to those seriously interested in the subject, for Pareto is generally considered a leading light in the field.
