The author has done some lovely illustrations for this authentic story of the adventures in the year of a ruffed grouse. When little Ruff chipped his way out of the egg, he had a great deal to learn:- stay close to mother; why one should keep away from foxes; how to drink dew from flowers; and how to fly. By fall he was a fullgrown grouse and was on his own and by winter had grown his own snowshoes to help him over the snow. Ruff almost has a terrible accident when he is imprisoned under the snow, but the spring finds him a healthy bird ready for courtin'. An absorbing story full of fine feathers. Excellent first or second year reading and nature study.
