Funk & Wagnalls published in 1948 a book LEARNING TO GARDEN, now out of print. Parts of that book are incorporated and substantially expanded in this excellent basic book for the gardening fraternity who have graduated from first steps but aren't quite ready for Bush-Brown or Montague Free. But even the beginner will find that Mrs. Gunnison does not take for granted familiarity with terminology or procedure. The steps of ""how-to"" are carefully charted. The pitfalls the amateur encounters, from landscaping a new place to launching forth on too extensive projects are dealt with. There is vastly more here than any one person will need in a first or second year, but it is so organized that one can take what one wants, and postpone the rest for later use. An extensive appendix provides useful bibliographies, lists of sources of information, lists of flowers to grow under different conditions, of shrubs, small trees, vines, and selected plants for city gardens. The sub-title:- What to do, When to do it, and How to do it, indicates the scope.
