Nursing was Clara Barton's bent, if not her realized ambition, from childhood, and to establish this there is a warm picture of Barton home life, with Clara as tomboy and white angel of the family. Moving then into Civil War years and her struggle to get sent to the front, there are enough harrowing details to excite rather than horrify. They make a logical prelude to another struggle, that of establishing the Red Cross in America. Explanations for the reasons why it took so long are weak, but that it did happen is perhaps enough.
