Against the white snow of Lapland, the beautiful white Reindeer Corps appeared like phantoms from nowhere, carrying supplies, and pulling sleds and constantly thwarting the Russian enemy. Because these white ""phantoms"" were so valuable to the army, Thorkild insisted that Matti and Kemi give up their beloved reindeer Viking, to the border patrol. He did not bargain that the two boys would come along too as stowaways. Once part of the Corps, Matti and Kemi are given the excitingly dangerous order to travel with Viking for 70 snow covered miles to the Norwegian border to bring back a badly needed surgeon. Viking comes through as if descended from the noble animals of the Viking kings. His response to the call of his own mind increases his heroism as he recovers a baby fawn trapped in an ice crevasse. This unusual story setting invites further investigation of the remarkable Phantom Reindeer Corps.
