A modern covered wagon story? Almost-- although it's a trailer in which Nancy, seventeen, Joe, her brother, fourteen, and their Aunt Cora set out in and then swap for thirty five untamed acres in Missouri along with a ramshackle house. But Nancy has many domestic skills, and after reclaiming and repairing indoors and out, she begins to weave-- place mats and carpets. And then they discover clay on the land which she can also use-- she can potter too. Olive Rambo Cook has done authentic pioneer stories (the Serilda books) and this combines their enterprise and endurance with their homemade skills in a contemporary setting.
