THE STORY OF ENGLAND

One might say it is impossible to tell the story of England in fifty pages of text and pictures -- some of them full page, many half pages, in color and black and white. And yet here it is done, and effectively done. Through intense compression and selection --the story from the Roman invasion to the blitz of 1940 is told with a feel of period and dominant characters and a sense of the vital factors that characterized each phase of England's history. In retrospect there seem conspicuous omissions, but the basic pattern is there, a springboard for further reading.
