A PAUSE IN THE DESERT: Short Stories

A unique collection of short stories, sixteen in all, which show the versatility, the sense of character and pace, the ability in brief words to paint a picture, to etch a character. One comes to such a collection taking for granted Oliver LaFarge's sensitive understanding of the Indian of today; one learns too that this perceptivity extends itself to the casual tourist, the old timer of the desert, the simple people from sturdy American backgrounds. There is humor here- something of pathos- a gift of poetic interpretation- a basic liking for people. For the essential flavor of the whole, read the title story, La Specialite de M. Duclos, To Walk in the City Streets, The Happy Indian Laughter, The Resting Place.
