THE ART OF ADMINISTRATION

A philosophy of modern business at the administrative level, rather than a practical, how-to-do-it book. This is no superficial charting of corporate and institutional administration, but a thoughtful consideration of administration as a science, as a fine art. Dr. Tead stresses the importance of recognition of aims and the means to those aims, of the areas of public opinion and setting, of the essential consideration of individual satisfaction and cooperation. He urges more inclusion of employees in unifying of interests; he explores human nature in action, as individuals with self development a goal, as illustrating the force of group dynamics. ""The job of management is to make democracy work"" is analyzed both from the angle of the what-why-how of democratic processes, and the difficulties attendant thereto. With this as philosophical groundwork, he turns to the down-to-earth study of the substance of administration,- labor management relations, personal power and authority, administrative leadership, personnel in its broadest sense, collective cooperation, coordination. In a final chapter he reviews the role of education, not only of those who administer but of the leaders in the labor union movement- the cultivation of the whole man...Not easy reading, but rewarding for the thoughtful, ambitious executive.
