While in age level this briges a gap between the revised edition of Rachel Carson's The Sea Around Us (p. 805, J-25-1958) and numerous books for the second and third grades, the author somehow fails to convey any enthusiasm for his subject or concern for his readers. He is obviously familiar with the sea and borderland; he has done considerable research, but the presentation is bland, and younger readers-with already alerted interest- will get the facts, but little more. It would seem worthwhile to reach further and get the valuable exciting Carson introduction to the world of the deep.
