With an introduction and commentary by Fred C. Kelly, here are Orville Wright's own words describing the steps to their world-changing invention. Buried in a law report and unclassified in the Library of Congress, this deposition, made as a witness for the United States government in a lawsuit in 1920, has appeared in part in Harper's and is now appearing for the first time in book form. It is a simply told story -- of the progression from books to activities, to ornithology, to experiments, to gliding as a sport and from then on, the close stury of methods which led to the making of models and early tests and the improvements those brought about. With proficiency in free flight came discouragements but with the changes in controls and the addition of power through a motor the famous 1903 flights of a heavier than air machine were made possible. Kelly's introduction, annotations and final summary round out this concise report which should have a definite place among the many histories of flight.
