The editor of the American Guardian of Oklahoma tells his life story with much gusto, good humor and observant criticism. A German immigrant, he made his way in America by playing in bands, painting farmers' portraits and living on his wits, and after a return trip to Europe, where he holidayed and studied, came to the United States to find his life work -- that of labor betterment. From the bottom he saw the worst phases of American life -- the poor white farmers, the downtrodden mine workers, the infant unions, the appalling ignorance in a land of plenty -- and he fought -- and still fights -- for social uplift. The early part is delightful reading of a bright young German's ability to get along, no matter what, the latter, his speechmaking, writing and fighting for the underdog, is interesting pioneer material in the labor field. An appealing job.
