Here is the third encyclopedia of music this season, The Macmillan and the Doubleday, Doran publications were reported on August 1st, page 323. The distinguishing feature of this volume seems to be the imposing list of contributors of special articles, internationally famous critics and musical authorities. The articles appear under the subject head as they come into the alphabetical arrangement of contents. One volume containing almost 3000 pages, containing the history of music, the lives of composers, the plots of opera, the trends and theories, the biographies of musical artists, musical instruments, data on opera houses and singers, a discussion of American music, full bibliographies, reference articles on miscellaneous musical subjects, analysis of compositions, orchestras and their leaders, lists of works, discussion of science of music, definitions of terms, forms, Negro music and other racial types.
