. . . is told with a picture-story-book format. The 100,000 mile area was granted statehood less than 100 years ago, in 1859. Although this history-story book records the successive claimants and settlers of the tall timber company, the early missionaries, the Lewis and Clarke Expedition, the fur traders and the gold prospectors, nowhere does the telling rise above the pedestrian. The tone is factual, objective, undramatic. As a projection of the early chapters of the opening of the Northwest, it is somewhat unsatisfying, falling short of the grandeur of its subject.
