Not, strictly speaking, a novel, but an original idea developed with a certain case and dry subtlety and perhaps more hoped for than realized. A book about a book and within a book as George, narrator, presents his version of the famous Horton family, after the publication of a biography which has sanctimoniously white-washed Horton, San Francisco pioneer. Horton's chief claim to fame was that he was a rich and prominent self-made man. The biography deliberately excluded the high- mischievous, self reliant girl who had been his mistress, and enlivened an otherwise full life. Slight but contagiously appealing; it may ""catch on"", particularly on the West Coast. A tour de force.
