Another exile's story, but one that is more an adventure of the spirit, unusually free from personal persecution and suffering, since Marck was sufficiently ahead of the Nazi Inquisitors, whether in Munich, Berlin, Vienna, Eudapest. A portrait of Germany, of the infiltration of Fascist ideology, and a portrait of the intellectual circles in which Zarek moved. Poet and playwright, member of the Free German Youth Movement, friend of the great (the book is full of personal aneciotal material), he was reluctant witness to the decay of the country he loved, a decay he feels too deeply rooted in the national spirit ever to be overcome. Interesting first hand record.
