KIRKUS REVIEW

There are many unexpected elements in the case involving the fatal stabbing of the factotum of an Earl who has been a recluse for some twenty-five years; his will which leaves a surprising amount of money to some surprising people; the suspicious origins of that money; the Earl's unknown romantic past- and his double identity in the present. Detective Superintendent Gaden of the Yard pursues his leads with equanimity and self-effacement..... Tolerable.
