This hammy farce has booming, boring father Devonish cast as Oberon in the local gardenparty production of ""Excerpts from Shakespeare,"" boy crazy sister Margaret playing off the neighborhood Romeos against each other, and poor Phoebe wanly nursing puppy love for the grownup author Maurice, who has himself been pursued into town by one of Father Devonish's old flames. Everything's meant to come together at curtain time in a hilarious crescendo of family crises, ripping tights and precisely timed sewage leaks. The slapstick, like sewage, finds its own level, but Phoebe's infatuation with Maurice is the soggiest case of first love we've seen.
