CHANGES, CHANGES

Those perennial nursery blocks building . . . with a little help from two soldierly babes in toyland. There stand the shapes erect: yellow, orange, red and green; one roof and two arched doorways later, there stands a house -- and in it, proud, the smiling boy and smiling girl. But now dismay; there's smoke and where there's smoke. . . their house afire! Determination and mobilization, dismantling here, rearranging there, and. . . a fire engine! complete with hose complete with water. Water. Water everywhere! dismay again, a wink, some more rebuilding, it's a boat: two smokestacks, two sailors arms raised in Ahoys -- dry land! Boat becomes truck. Oh the truck must have stalled but why push? why not change it? A train's just the thing; a steam engine! A steam engine? where there's steam there's smoke and. . . (recognition) . . . . More toil. No trouble at all. . . . No words at all either, The drawing pen is so much mightier, the metamorphoses a perpetual treat.
