An escape story, which brings with it much of the invention, the courage coupled with resourcefulness, and the inveterate determination which fire these annals of evasion. Reid's story is not only his, but that of many of his fellow prisoners- French and Polish and Dutch- in the impregnable fortress of Colditz- the ""bad boys' camp"" for repeaters. Reid qualified for his admission there after his first time out from a camp near Salzburg which ended, after several days of beating the woods, in his apprehension. His Colditz story is one of some two odd years of constant plans and preparations- and failure; of tunnelling new exits which the Germans, assisted by informers, spotted; of stratagems and hoaxes; and finally the successful home run across the Swiss frontier.... This has not quite the concentrated continuity of The Wooden Horse, or the conspiratorial impudence of The Natives are Friendly, but a verve and a vitality of its own to recommend it to an adventure-minded audience.
