What happened was suburbanization, and Ross' simple case history of how a working family farm succumbs to the pressures of real estate development, the high cost of mechanized milking, and the children's lack of interest in farming explains on a small scale the kind of dramatic changes that Spier documents in his panoramic Tin Lizzie (1975): The mixture of Duvoisin's picture-book farm and a text that deals with mortgages and eight-year leases (in easy terms, of course) may be difficult to place. But the discussion is appropriately scaled--and the phenomenon visible enough--to make the transition from particularized observation to sociological generalizations easier than most.
