Operation Barney consisted of nine submarines, known collectively as the Hellcats, which in 1945 entered the Sea of Japan and sent 70,000 tons of enemy shipping to the bottom. With the development of sonar equipment, the subs entered the Emperor's own Mare Nostrum, some to perish but most to remain living parts of what is recorded in a holding account for all sea lovers.
