ST. LAWRENCE SEAWAY

While the actual building of the St. Lawrence Seaway has taken four short years, the violent emotional upheaval, the political implications, the peripheral battles (not yet finished) are virtually ignored here. The emphasis is on the achievement itself, and the potentials in perhaps the most significant geographic event that has taken place for those cities of the United States and Canada that are affected. By connecting the Great Lakes with the Atlantic Ocean, inland cities can become major ports, and already there is a teeming activity of expansion under way. The response of our own cities to the possibilities ahead, the difficulties they face, and their potential futures are dramatized in what reads as exciting contemporary history of the Seaway and its effects.
