A fast-paced story on the age-old subject of shifting friendships--with a refreshing twist. Martha's lifelong ""best"" friend, Jenny, informs her that she is now ""best friends with Phyllis Blott."" Hurt and rejected, Martha begins a tenuous friendship with Teddy, the class weirdo, whose sole attraction is that he owns a Ouija board. When Martha calls up an actual spirit, she and Teddy are drawn together by fear, but their friendship falters when Martha allows Jenny's teasing to humiliate her; Martha finds that she must choose between Teddy and Jenny, leading to soul searching and the writing of a sensitive composition on friendship. In a none-too-predictable ending, Teddy and the Ouija board come through in a crisis and Martha learns that not all of Jenny's friends are as thoughtless as they'd seemed. A deft tale, told with humor, that never ignores the more serious underlying themes of friendship and peer pressure.
