A moody, introspective study of adolescence turns on seventeen year old Ronnie Gaines' preoccupation with Big Caesar, the battered thirty year old truck which the boy determines to rehabilitate. Ronnie idolizes Millicent and mistakes her sympathy for response to his overpowering infatuation. Though his classmates jeer at the truck, Ronnie takes Millicent out in it on the night of a blizzard and the truck pulls many hapless motorists through to safety. Ronnie awakens to the realization that Millicent too is in the throes of first love -- but not with him. A perceptive rendering of teen-aged traumas. But its appeal will be to just a few sophisticated adolescent readers.
