Each chapter deals with a separate country, or group of countries, recalling personal experiences, reconstructing conversations with important figeres, or speculating on the essence of the spirit. He writes easily and well, and the book is entertaining reading, sometimes amusing, more often thoughtful and sad, but to final analysis it adds little to one's background of knowledge, serving rather to local things known, a past that is gone forever.
