GOD AND MAN IN WASHINGTON

Unlike some of his earlier books, this new volume from Paul Blanshard might be termed challenging rather than controversial. It is a book about religion and its impact it the national political level, astutely handled, and important at this particular time in history. Paul Blanshard sketches with experienced skill the tortuous trails woven by politicians and ecclesiastics alike as they work out a truly American creation -- freedom of religion in a democratic state. Both Church and State leaders use, misuse and sometimes abuse each other. But neither side can ignore the other and so there arises a dynamic, creative tension which is generally fruitful to the American way. However, frustrating impasses often may seem to occur. There is an impressive shift in Paul Blanshard's thinking to a real appreciation of the many positive contributions being made to this creative atmosphere by all kinds of Christians, Jews and others. This is a timely book, especially as we approach a Presidential election where religion has already proved to be an issue. Preachers will need it, politicians must have it and so will any American who wonders why the religion of any candidate is of concern to so many voters. It will still be a good ook after the election.
