DEMOCRACY AND EMPIRE IN THE CARIBBEAN

A concise, brief resume of the Caribbean in terms of history, economics, ethnics, social structure, politics, etc. and specifically of the forces of imperialism and democracy in the islands. The author's method is to consider each island of the Caribbean empire,- British, American, French and Dutch, and the three independent countries,- Cuba, Haiti and the Dominican Republic. In a final chapter he reviews in general the measures of self reform that have evolved within the colonial system, and makes nine specific proposals to encourage economic prosperity and to strengthen democracy in the area. An informative, basic reference book on a neighboring region of which our general knowledge is spotty. But not a book that persuades one to read for pleasure (as is the case with such writers as De Leeuw or Eleanor Early).
