The tiny principality of Liechtenstein lies on the border of Switzerland and Austria, and this provides the setting for another small story of a miracle. Paul Gallico has a gift for giving a sense of reality to such stories as The Small Miracle and now Ludmila, in which the faith of a child and the human sensitivity transferred to an animal combine to make the reward of unquestioning belief moving and convincing. The story this time concerns a small cow that yearned to give of a bounty denied her by nature; and of how the last days in the Alpine pastures brought the triumphant answer to her wish, and that of the little girl who believed that her name saint of the milkmaids could achieve a miracle. Only skilled craftsmanship- and a deep understanding of the mountain people- could convey this legend.
