KIRKUS REVIEW

Third in the panels of Iowan farm and country town life, of which Three Miles Square and The Road Returns were the first two. This continues the story of the Widow Mantz and her four children, against the years from 1924 on, with the growing power of the K K K, revelry by night, the stock market crash, et al -- as experienced in a prairie town. There is a quiet honesty, a feel of the region -- but a lack of the pace, the penetration that -- for example, gives Ruth Suckow's The Folks its lasting quality. You can gauge your market by the first two.
