LOVE IS A SPENDTHRIFT

A group of colleagues and friends of Paul Scherer wished to honor him upon his retirement from the Chair of Homiletics at the Union Theological Seminary in New York. They have done so by publishing a series of meditations for the Christian year, chosen from the various published and unpublished works of Dr. Scherer. Nothing could be more moving and felicitous, for Paul Scherer can illumine the mind and stir the heart more truly and deeply, and with fewer words, than anyone who has spoken from an American pulpit in this generation. Some of those meditations are but a paragraph, -- others only a sentence or so, as that chosen for the Saturday of the 4th week in Advent, and from which the title of the book is chosen. ""Love is a spendthrift, leaves arithmetic at home, is always 'in the red'! And God is love"". All who read this book, and they should be many, will be grateful for the privilege. There is much in it for everyone.
