KIRKUS REVIEW

Paul Engle has never -- for me reached again the peak of his first volume, American ong, but I like this new volume better than anything else he has done since that. There is more of today, more awareness of the function of the poet even to the se of the verse form in the intensity of his passion for America and liberty, sustained, eature. Even the nature poems revert to philosophical pondering on con. The Finni War, from two ngles, occupies the forefront, among the longer poems. Includes a good many fine lyrics.
