Here is the best book to date on hot jazz, less technical than Wilder Hobson's AMERICAN JAZZ MUSIC (Norton) and quite an extraordinary piece of work. Ten specialists contribute chapters in his own field -- New Orleans blues, boogie woogie, Dixieland, and so forth. The content and the styles match. The big figures in the field from New Orleans, to Chicago, to New York; Buddy Bolton, King Oliver, Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Bix Beiderbeck, Bessie Smith, and down the 52nd Street line-up of the moment. Negroes chiefly. Last chapters on ""hot collecting"" and the viewpoint of the critics on jazz. A Must for your addict, but a specialized sale -- and within those limits a grand job.
