KIRKUS REVIEW

Subtitled An Informal History of the Southwest this covers some 400 turbulent years. There are the Spanish conquistadores and the stamp they put on a whole region. There were the Indian wars, the good and bad padres and governors- and among the French of the region the same balance maintained. Following on with the European conflict for dominance there is the unsteady triumph of the young U.S.A. and the economic development of the last century. An enormous amount of material is packed into these pages.
