Without dullness or pedantry, Henry VIII and his scandalous marital career are again served up for a public that likes its history well spiced. The six wives together with all the mistresses, state international and religious problems are painlessly presented and the sexual background is thoroughly investigated. Henry marrying his brother's widow, disgusted with her inability to produce an heir, his fight to win Anne, who teased and scolded, his desire for Jane and placidity, his dislike of ugly Anne of Cleves, his passion for Catherine Howard and his final choice of Parr make entertaining reading. Henry is not whitewashed and the portrait of a grossly sensual man who rationalizes his desires emerges. Interesting as a Frenchman's interpretation of English history -- nevertheless conservatives should be cautioned because of the predominance of sex.
