THE GREAT NATURALISTS EXPLORE SOUTH AMERICA

I found this pretty dull -- unnecessarily so, for the author has taken the various explorers, given brief biographical notes and presented the contributions they made to exploration and discovery in the field of zoology, ornithology, etc. Given people like Darwin, Humboldt, Waterton, Wallace, Bates, Hudson and others, there seems no excuse for lack of human interest, but not one of the men discussed emerges as a human being. The bulk of the book deals with the animals, birds, snakes, insects, butterflies, and so on. Factual data for naturalists, but not for laymen.
