A bevy of fancifully colored and benignly visaged little dinosaurs counts up from one to 10. More an adjunct of the Sticklands’ other books (Dinosaur Roar, 1994, etc.) than a stand-alone of any kind, it offers little text and even littler story, but a basic lesson in addition helps to compensate. “One little dinosaur... / plus one more, makes... two little dinosaurs...” and so on. Rising from the middle of each spread is a pop-up numeral. It doesn’t seem as though there’s much to this, but readers will notice as they advance through the pages that the size of the numerals is increasing, forcing the accumulating dinosaurs into the margins until both 10 and the dinosaurs explode from the gutter. This has immediate and obvious appeal to dinosaur-loving preschoolers, who won’t notice there’s any education going on. (Pop-up. 3-6)
