DYNAMICS OF FAITH

A new book by Paul Tillich (others: The Protestant Era; The Shaking of the Foundations; The Courage to Be) is eagerly welcomed by all serious students of man and religion, for he is one of the best known and respected teachers of religion writing today. Once Professor of Philosophy and Theology at the Union Theological Seminary, New York, he is now University Professor at Harvard University. This new book, Dynamics of Faith, is volume 10 in Harper's World Perspective series, and succeeds in raising man's sights considerably beyond and above this world. Here he discusses faith in such a way that its importance as ""the central phenomenon in man's personal life"" should commend itself to those who cannot accept orthodox religions. He explains intellectual distortions of faith; the meaning of myths and symbols; the reason why there should be no conflict between science and faith; and the true nature of faith's healing powers. The general reader will find heavy going through some of the closely-reasoned compact argument, but the persistent one will be richly rewarded for his effort by deepened insight and a stronger faith.
