A new book by Dr. Paul Tillich, now Professor at the Harvard Divinity School, is an event widely welcomed by an ever increasing number of serious thinkers, Christian and otherwise, who recognize him as one of the master minds of our age. Theology of Culture is a collection of lectures and essays in which Tillich's immense wisdom ranges far as he discusses the religious dimension in many special spheres of man's cultural activity. ""This discussion"", he reminds his reader, ""is never absent in cultural creations even if they show no relation to religion in the narrower sense of the word."" Here the reader gets glimpses of the theological basis for the analysis of our time which Tillich has constructed during the past thirty years, but also the especially acute diagnosis which he makes of this anxious world in which we live, and he marvels at Tillich's wide-ranging concern for all that touches human life, --politics, sociology, the arts and,- though not especially, religion. No reader will find the book easy-going, but he is likely to return to it more than once to reexamine its brilliance in the light of his own increasing experience.
