BUTTERFLY AND MOTH

Vivid full-color photographs and a brief text provide browsing information on butterflies and moths from around the world. Each two-page spread presents nearly a dozen photographs and drawings and a paragraph on a particular theme: for example, ""Camouflage,"" ""The pupa stage,"" or ""Temperate butterflies."" As with other titles in the Eyewitness series, the text is subordinate to the dramatic, beautifully reproduced photographs. The captions provide the common and scientific names for subjects and the geographic distribution. Size is only occasionally indicated, and the young viewer may well wonder whether the Indian Moon moth or the Homerus Swallowtail really has a wing span of 12 inches as shown. Other information is sketchy: ""Because it lives high up in the dense, steamy forests of New Guinea, it is hardly surprising that little is known about the Purple Swallowtail, Graphium weiskei.""
