The New York Drama Critics' Award winner as best American play of the 1969-70 season is on the surface about a schoolgirl struggling out from under a ravaging domestic entrapment with a blowsy, alcoholic mother and an unstrung sister. Lacking the dynamics of the stage production, however, the book is receivable as melodrama; otherwise there's a lot underneath to grapple with, at least for the lesser Zindel coterie who never loved his mind.
