Zindel's short, striking one-act play is set in a laboratory where scientists are trying to teach a dolphin to speak but where Helen, the new night scrubwoman, is the only one really interested in ""communicating"" with it. The dolphin does speak to Helen after she discovers that it is to be killed for not ""learning"" to talk, but she's unable to save it and unwilling, like the animal, to cooperate in a plan which involves using it in warfare projects. In effective contrast to simple Helen, her supervisor Miss Moray speaks throughout in sterile ""personnel"" jargon; otherwise the cast consists of a couple of male bits and the dolphin in a tank -- the latter presenting perhaps some staging problems, but he and Helen make a heroic pair.
