SCANDINAVIAN KNITTING DESIGNS

A handsome collection of traditional designs, intended for proficient knitters. After speculating briefly on the historical origins of knitting--noting similarities in the motifs of Scandinavian pieces, Persian carpets, and Slavic embroideries--and providing instructions on key stitches and basic techniques, Chatterton introduces the two-color patterns--an impressive array. Grouped according to type of design (flowers, diamonds, vertical and horizontal bands, squares) they are attractively displayed, each with a photograph of a finished piece and two stitch charts--one of the basic pattern, one of the repeating pattern. Over 100 designs are included, plus 50 more for borders. At the end, directions--from materials needed to binding off--are given for a number of projects: pillows, afghans, sweaters, hats. Chatterton makes wool-gathering a productive pastime.
