Written for a teen-age audience, To the Top of the World is an engrossing account of the intertwined lives of the two Americans, Robert Peary and Matthew Henson, who were the first men to reach the North Pole. One of these men possessed advantages of family and an engineering education as well as personal brilliance, stamina and drive while the other was a Negro whose self-education, endurance and skill were equally remarkable. The presence of Peary's wife Josephine and birth of their daughter at one of the Arctic base camps may appeal to girls in a book of particular interest for boys. The hardships and dangers as well as the thought, planning and execution of the Arctic explorations made under Peary's leadership are treated with clarity and in considerable detail. The maps are to be prepared by Rand McNally's Cartography Department. Publication is tentatively set for April 6, the 55th anniversary of Peary's reaching the Pole.
