CHILDREN FOR ADOPTION

By

Publisher: Random House

Pearl Buck knows her subject here. Adoptive mother of three ""mixed-blood"" children herself and the founder of Welcome House, Inc., a Pennsylvania agency for placing orphans of Asian-American parentage, she describes the unsatisfactory situation of the ""adoption business"" in this country. Whereas in Asia all children are valued, regardless of birthright, America seems unable to deal properly with the masses of ""unwanted children,"" the increasing numbers of unwed mothers, and the practical problems of matching infants to prospective parents. Why the write, grey, and black markets in babies, why 40,000 ""unadoptable"" children, why the legal timelag between application and placement?- questions Miss Buck tries to answer and explain. She also makes a bid for understanding, community responsibility and ""the nature of love."" Her name and the warmth in words that made that name popular should contribute to the recognition this will receive as part plea, part documentation.
