OTHER GODS

Once again, as in This Proud Heart, Pearl Buck turns to the American scene, and to a study of a psychological conflict in marriage. Quite frankly, we do not feel that the author is at her best in this type of book; her characters seem two dimensional, her situations artificial, her plots thin-spun. Other Gods centers interest on the efforts of Kit Tallant to solve the problem -- an insuperable one -- of marriage to a cardboard hero. One feels that a story has been superimposed upon an idea, rather than an idea growing out of a story, out of character and situation. However, the novel is no strain on the grey matter and will doubtless sell-and rent.
