THE RAINBOW

Henry Potter, fifty even if he sounds like eighty, is bored with his Cadillac-chauffeured life and wife Ethel when he goes to a play with her--a modern play--which ""stinks like a rotten watermelon."" But its director interests him in angeling another better vehicle (while Ethel goes off on a cruise) and before long he's all too involved with its shabby, scruffy star Elena (""Why Henry, I didn't know you could."") and her ambivalent feelings toward director Dane--a triangle then, the old one-two, from which Henry retrieves himself in time. Apparently Miss Buck's literary remains have not been exhausted but on the face of it, they're certainly depleted.
